Biography

SAVA VEMIĆ, born 1987 in Belgrade, studied music and voice first at the Music school “Mokranjac” and later at the University of Arts in his hometown and then continued it as a member of the Metropolitan Opera’s Lindemann Young Artist Development Program from 2014 to 2017 in New York where he made his debut in Verdi’s Nabucco.
He performs internationally around the world and in the past two seasons he has performed the role of King Rene (Tchaikovsky’s Iolanta) at the Israeli Opera House in Tel Aviv, Daland (Wagner’s Der fliegende Holländer) in Barcelona, Sarastro (Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte) in Eutin Festival, Il Frate (Verdi’s Don Carlo) in Paris Opera, Oroveso (Bellini’s Norma) at the Odeon Herodes Atticus Theater in Athens, Prince Bouillon (Cilea’s Adriana Lecouvreur) in Paris Opera, Bauer (Schönberg’s Gurre-lieder) with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra in Sydney Opera House, Don Fernando (Beethoven’s Fidelio) with the Canadian Opera Company in Toronto, Méphistophélès (Gounod’s Faust) at the SNT in Novi Sad, Faust (Prokofiev’s The Fiery Angel) at Teatro Petruzzelli in Bari, Eliakim (Parać’s Judita) with Munich Radio Symphony Orchestra in Munich.
He made his professional debut as Sarastro (The Magic Flute) in Belgrade and sang this role several times in New National Theater in Tokyo, Gärtnerplatztheater (GPT) in Munich and in Bad Lauchstädt. Other important roles that he performed include Ramfis (Aida) with Semperoper Dresden, Silva (Ernani) with Opera Vlaanderen in Antwerpen, Ferrando (Il Trovatore) with Teatro Massimo in Palermo, Chief of the Police (Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk) in Paris Opera, Don Quichotte (Don Quichotte) in National Theater in Belgrade, King (Aida) in Arena di Verona Festival, Sparafucile (Rigoletto) in GPT in Munich, Verbier festival and Guatemalan National Theater, King Henry VIII (Anna Bolena), Crespel (Les Contes d’Hoffmann), Commendatore (Don Giovanni) in GPT in Munich, Prince Gremin (Eugene Onegin) in Hawaii Opera and GPT in Munich, the Death (Der Kaiser von Atlantis) at the Teatro Maestranza in Seville, Count Rodolfo (La Sonnambula), Ernesto (Parisina) in New York, Osmin (The Abduction from the Seraglio) with IVAI in Tel Aviv.
He is regularly performing concert repertoire such the bass parts in Haydn’s Nelson Mass and Mozart’s Coronation Mass in Carnegie Hall in New York, Rossini’s Petite messe solennelle in La Filature in Mulhouse, Beethoven’s Missa solemnis and 9th Symphony and Mozart’s Requiem in Kolarac Hall in Belgrade.
Conductors he so far worked are: Simone Young, James Levine, Gustavo Dudamel, Daniel Oren, Vladimir Jurowski, Alain Altinoglu, Omer Meir Wellber, Johannes Debus, Valery Gergiev, Fabio Luisi, Ivan Repušić, Marc Albrecht, Speranza Scappucci, Eve Queller, Ingo Metzmacher, Kent Nagano, Stanislav Kochanovsky, Anthony Bramall, Jordi Bernacer, Roland Böer, Oleg Ptashnikov, Howard Arman, Eugen Kohn, Srba Dinić, Aleksandar Marković, Paolo Bartolameolli.
He received several awards, including first Prizes at the 2016 Opera Index International Vocal Competition in New York and the 2014 Gerda Lissner International Vocal Competition in New York and Finalist award of Belvedere competition in Moscow in 2017.
